Lifestyle and culture.

- By Mary Stephens

No matter how many centuries pass, we will always hold strong to our roots and values.

Regularly attending masses and actively participating in missionary activities form a major part of our life. Socializing and entertainment are our favourites. We often have a good time with our close friends and family over a brunch or dinner.

We are proud to say that we Christians are a close knit community. Our devotion towards our faith unites us all. Attending the Sunday Mass is a relief from the hustle of life and we take this opportunity not only to pray and offer help to the needy; but also to establish contacts and maintain friendly relationships.

Life and religion are not two separate entities for us, as we love the life we live and live the life we love!

Did you know?
There are many interesting beliefs in our faith and most of them are centuries old.
Here are few facts you never knew!

  • There are about 34,000 Christian denominations in the world.
  • Job is the oldest book written in the Bible - it was written by an unknown Israelite around 1500 BC.
  • The word "trinity" is not mentioned in the Bible.
  • The last word in the Bible is AMEN.
  • John was the only apostle who witnessed the crucifixion of Jesus.
  • The bride's veil symbolized her youth and virginity. A veil is worn so that the bride remains modest and hides herself from jealous spirits.
  • The throwing of rice on the couple is symbolic of wishing prosperity and good luck.
  • The circular shape of the wedding ring has symbolized undying, unending love since the days of the early Egyptians.
  • In ancient times, the bridesmaids were dressed in identical clothing while the bride wore a different dress and a veil. This was done in the hope of confusing the evil spirits that may be descending on the bride. If their disguises failed, the bridesmaids were ready to absorb any evil spirits that may have been ready to attack the bride!
  • The Arras is a small box containing thirteen either gold or silver coins. The thirteen coins represent Christ and His twelve Apostles. The groom presents the Arras to the bride after the vows have been exchanged as a symbol of his readiness to provide financial support in their married life. This also signifies good financial stewardship of the household. When the groom gives the coins to the bride she promises to use them wisely.

Let's now take a quick look at our Origins and more:
With around 2.4 billion adherents, split into 3 main branches of Catholic, Protestant, and Orthodox, we are the world's largest religion! Did you know that one in three persons on earth is a Christian!!

Looks like we are one large happy family!

Christianity is well known for its interesting history. We are very much proud of our glorious past and our 'steeped in tradition' roots. Christianity was founded in the 1st century in the Levant region of the Middle East (modern Israel and Palestine) by the followers of Jesus of Nazareth who they believed to be the Christ or chosen one of God. Since then our brotherhood has grown in size and many willingly joined to follow Our Father over the centuries.

How we grew...

With the help of a few avid believers Christianity spread initially from Jerusalem throughout the Near East, into places such as Syria, Assyria, Mesopotamia, Phoenicia, Asia Minor, Jordan, and Egypt. In the 4th century it was successively adopted as the state religion by Armenia in 301, Georgia in 319, Aksumite Empire in 325, and then the Roman Empire in 380. It became common to all of Europe in the Middle Ages and expanded throughout the world during Europe's Age of Exploration from the Renaissance onwards to become the world's largest religion. Ever since then there has been no turning back. As the time grows. Our faith grows...
